ACT Test 2026: A Complete Guide for International Students

NEXA’s practical 2026 guide to the ACT: sections, updated scoring, registration, preparation and retesting.

The ACT is a widely used college-readiness and admissions test, especially in the United States, and may also be accepted outside the U.S. depending on each institution. For an international applicant, the right starting point is the target university’s requirements.

What is the ACT?

The ACT is a standardized assessment of skills associated with college readiness. In the current format, the Composite score is built from English, Math and Reading, while Science and Writing are optional.

What changed in 2025–2026?

Since September 2025, the Composite score has been calculated from English, Math and Reading only. Beginning in February 2026, additional enhancements for international test takers introduced fewer questions and an updated structure, so older ACT tables online may no longer match the current test.

Enhanced ACT structure in 2026
SectionQuestionsTimeIn Composite?Main focus
English5035 minYesRevision, grammar, usage and style
Math4550 minYesMathematical skills and problem solving
Reading3640 minYesComprehension, inference and analysis
Science4040 minOptionalData interpretation and scientific reasoning
Writing1 essay40 minOptionalArgument, organization and written analysis

How is the ACT scored?

Correct answers are converted to section scores on a 1–36 scale, with no penalty for incorrect answers. The Composite score is the average of English, Math and Reading, rounded to the nearest whole number.

Key ACT score types
ScoreScaleDescription
Composite1–36Average of English, Math and Reading
Section Scores1–36Individual section scores, including Science when taken
STEM1–36Average of Math and Science when Science is taken
Writing2–12Optional Writing score
ELA1–36Combines English, Reading and Writing when Writing is taken

Is there a penalty for guessing?

No. ACT does not subtract points for wrong answers, so leaving a question blank is generally unnecessary.

Is the ACT required for studying in Türkiye?

There is no single rule covering every Turkish university. ACT acceptance depends on the university, program, admission route and academic year, so applicants should verify the exact requirement instead of assuming ACT replaces every other exam or document.

ACT and U.S. universities

ACT remains widely accepted in the United States, and ACT states that 100% of U.S. colleges accept ACT scores. Individual institutions can still set their own score, scholarship and score-reporting policies.

Registration and international test dates

International registration is handled through MyACT. Not every country has established test centers, and not every center is scheduled for every date, so check the available center and date before registering.

Common international ACT testing windows
WindowPractical note
SeptemberCheck country-specific center availability
OctoberAvailability varies by country and center
DecemberEarly registration is useful where capacity is limited
FebruaryCan fit applicants planning for the next admission cycle
AprilCoordinate with application deadlines
JuneUseful for early planning
JulyAvailability is not uniform across centers

How should you prepare for the ACT?

Start with a diagnostic test, identify weak areas, use targeted practice, and then move to full-length timed tests. The enhanced test gives more time per question, but speed and accuracy still matter.

A practical preparation plan
StageGoalApplication
DiagnosisMeasure your baselineTake a full test and record mistakes
Skill buildingStrengthen weak areasPractice grammar, math, reading and data interpretation
Time managementImprove speed and accuracyUse timed drills
SimulationTest readinessTake full tests
ReviewReduce repeated errorsAnalyze your error log

Can I retake the ACT? When are scores released?

Yes. Students can retake the ACT, and ACT supports Superscoring based on the highest English, Math and Reading scores across multiple tests, subject to score-reporting policies. ACT says more than 97% of scores are available within about 2–4 weeks, while complete reports may take longer when Writing is included.

NEXA’s takeaway

Do not choose the ACT simply because it is well known. Connect it to your actual goal: university, program, country and deadline. That makes the ACT one part of a complete admissions plan.
